If you’re an Aussie or a Kiwi living in the UK and haven't already caught the news, we're happy to tell you that as of December 31st 2024, your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card has become a thing of the past. Yep, the UK has finally caught up with the digital age with a move to eVisas!
Goodbye BRP, hello eVisa!
Instead of carrying around a physical card to prove your immigration status, everything will now be stored digitally. This means no more worrying about losing your BRP or having it mysteriously vanish in the washing machine (we’ve all been there). Instead, your visa will be linked electronically to your passport through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) system.
Why is this a good thing? Well, here are a few perks:
- ✅ No More Lost Cards – No need to stress about losing your BRP on a night out or while moving flats. Your visa is safely stored online.
- ✅ Easier Proof of Status – Need to show your immigration status to an employer or landlord? Just share a digital code—no card fumbling required.
- ✅ No Renewal Hassle – BRP cards were due to expire at the end of 2024 anyway, so this shift saves you from the tedious renewal process.
What do you need to do with your existing BRP card?
If you’re an Aussie or Kiwi with a BRP, here’s what you should do ASAP:
- 1️⃣ Set up a UKVI account – The UK government has been emailing visa holders with instructions. If you haven’t received one yet, don’t panic—just head to the UKVI website and set up your account.
- 2️⃣ Link your passport – Since your eVisa will be tied to your passport, make sure your details are up to date. If you renew your passport later, you’ll need to update your UKVI account too.
- 3️⃣ Get familiar with the system – Since your visa is now digital, learn how to access and share your status online. It’s all pretty straightforward, but it’s worth checking in advance.
If you’re still clutching your BRP like it’s a golden ticket, it’s time to embrace the digital age. The shift to eVisas is meant to make life easier, and as long as you get your UKVI account sorted, you’ll be good to go. So, say goodbye to BRP cards and hello to a smoother, digital future!
